My wife will just reach over and turn off my NPR when she gets in.

My wife turns the radio up to tune the kids out. I actually like to drive mostly without music. It drives her nuts.

Funny — I usually turn off my wife’s NPR when I get in.

“I don’t got time for no facts — Where’s the classic rock station?”

Never tried NPR. From what i hear it’s just talk radio. I’m hooked on satellite

Not the same situation, but my sister is a very timid driver... I find the gas pedal works as a volume control for her. It gets quite fun...

“This looks like a good place to go fast.”

“nononoNONO don’t”

“Wrong answer!! *floors gas*”

“aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH”

We had our two nephews for an overnight this weekend, ages 9 and 11. I’ve never heard so much about pokemon go in my life, and mainly while we were driving because they discovered my truck has wifi (3 month trial subscription) so they could play in the car. That volume got loud realllly quick.

Yeah, I’ll ditto the kids thing. My wife and I bickered a little before kids, but there's something akin to having a united front against a common enemy. HEY IS THIS EARTH WIND & FIRE?! TURN IT UP! I can do funk, but I draw the line at disco.

I fluctuate. I’ll listen to music every day, then I’ll take a break for a few days/weeks/months.

Do you find there’s certain music you can’t drive to? I had some Dream Theater going a few days ago, never again if I have anything to say about it. Exhaust note synced almost perfect with the bottom bass string. Really messed with me. Can’t do rap either. Literally can’t keep it between the lines, don’t know why.

Country (modern or not) ftw as far as driving music goes.

We usually turn the radio way down or off when we are in the car, even with the kids. It promotes conversation. When the conversation runs dry, I’ll turn up the radio (usually classic rock) and ask the kids to name the group/artist. After we all torture each other with a little car karaoke, the volume goes down because we’ve found something new to talk about.

Long trips are different. Without the wife, the radio is playing a book (thanks, Audible!). With the wife, everyone uses earbuds to create their own listening zone. I usually put one bud in to listen to a book and keep the other ear open.

Conversation is different though when there’s actual information being exchanged. Some days it’s just her talking, me listening with the “uh huh, yep, gotcha, no way, get outta here” responding to an overload of details how her day was at work.

When you turn up the radio and pretend it’s your wife talking because you don’t have a wife.

Kinja'd!!!

Hah! I’m just kidding.

I never listen to the radio.

I have 4 presets, NPR, Classical and two 80's music stations. Recently we had one station go under and a 2nd 80's station came! Now I can switch between the two. I like classic rock but I worked in our union’s shop in the past and the old guys would just leave that station on all the time or play the same CDs. It’s a form of torture. I NEVER want to hear Hotel CA or Stairway again. The really popular Beetles songs are all going to have to wait maybe 30 years before I can listen again. Fortunately my favorite Beetles songs are not the ones the stations pump out six times a day. They play Hotel CA at least twice a day. The shop is better now that we have MP3 players and bluetooth speakers, every corner of the shop has it’s own music. I don’t go there anymore anyway.

Never done that, but I’m pretty good at just tuning people or noise out in general.

Hmm, earbuds. That seems so odd to me! But then again I almost always drive by myself or at most one other person. I don’t think I ever drive without music playing, the few times that I do are very strange. Never tried listening to books since I would find it very hard to pay attention that long. With music, I don’t even notice words, it is just soothing sounds at some point of driving after a while.

Two of the guys in my shop think Lynyrd Skynyrd and the (fucking) Eagles (man) are the greatest bands of all time. If I put anything else on Spotify or Pandora, they inevitably change it back within 5 minutes and get all indignant. I listen to NPR to and from work, and have to listen to bullshit all day. I’ve been a musician my whole life and have a broad taste in music, so this bugs the shit out of me.
